Since I'm an amateur radio operator, I imagine I have more than the average amounts of wires and cables running around. My cat Marty does indeed enjoy chewing things from my shoes to some of my cables, but you can train a cat not to do that. Just a spray bottle of water works wonders since Marty doesn't like getting hit in the face with a stream of water. He learned withing a month of him coming here to leave wires and cable around, and I can't imagine a cat aboard ship couldn't also be trained the same way. My impression is that current naval brass would rather pander to the small number of sailors that have a cat allergy serious enough to interfere with performance compared to the overwhelming number of sailors whose morale is improved by having a cat around to pet and play with. Especially with warships that now spend months at sea, having a buddy around who's not in a uniform is kind of a big deal.

One example of a deliberate attack on a lighthouse was the shelling of the Estevan Point light complex by the I-26 on June 20, 1942. Estevan Point was one of the most important lighthouses on the Pacific Coast, and her RDF navigation radio station had one of the longest ranges covering the same area. Although the attack didn't cause any damage to the lighthouse, the subsequent decision to turn off the outer lights did cause several ships to run aground on the rocks in the area, so the ultimate goal of the attack was at least partially fulfilled by Canadian authorities.
