  1. How were orders passed to the gunner's mates on ships during the age of sail. I assume the noise and smole as a result of 40 or 50 cannon firing at once must have made it impossible to do it by voice. Was there some system of semaphores, horns, what? There must have been a system for firing only certain guns rather than full broadsides.
