The Allies were very lucky the Japanese didn't have radar. A long range shot at 32 knots could travel 25 miles. A long range shot depended on optical spotting, but even their excellent optics were only good out to about 15 miles. They had to launch long range attacks based on where the enemy vessels were last seen, generally less than 15 miles away. That meant using a lot of math and experience to set a long range course, and a lot of luck about actually hitting something. The Japanese actually hoped they were attacked by a large fleet, since a failure to hit the first ships in the line still meant there was a enough range left to hit ships in the secondary line. If the Japanese had radar or developed homing technology, the Type 93 would have had much better success.
