  1. Senator Barry Goldwater was also a Reserve Major General in the Arizona National Guard and accomplished pilot. He was the author of many bills advancing the causes of veterans and Native Americans, the recognition of the "Hello Girls" being one of his veteran's bills. I was a little young to vote in 1964, but I worked on his campaign, this at a time when every other 20 year old was a flaming liberal. Goldwater was roundly trashed in the 1964 campaign as being crazy, but I think he would have made a much better president that Johnson ever turned out to be.
