Commander Cody was rather late to the game with "Hot Rod Lincoln". It was written and recorded in 1955 by Charlie Ryan and The Timberline Riders. Note the similarity between that name and Commander Cody and The Lost Planet Airmen. The biggest hit version was by Johnny Bond in 1960, and this is the one I listened to as a ninth grader. The Cody version was considered by many of us who liked country music as a group of dopers rerecording the song to more or less make fun of country bumpkins. It did gain a lot of popularity with other dopers back than.

After the centerline, the next most important invention was the so-called fog line on the edge of the road. It was first suggested by well known chemical engineer, John Van Nostrand Dorr, and first applied to one four mile stretch of highway on the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut in the mid-50's. From there, it has slowly spread throughout the country. It has saved countless drivers from inadvertently running off the road, both day and night. I find it very difficult to drive on roads without fog lines as I have gotten older.
