  1. The first extensive use of the CRT was for the oscilloscope, a way to visualize electrons being transmitted over the air or excited in a piece of electronic gear. US amateur radio operators developed the panoramic adaptor in the late 1920's, using an oscilloscope to show a series of peaks and valleys representing radio signals within a couple hundred KHz of the center signal. It was this panoramic, or panadapter, that first gave the idea for using the CRT for television and, in the late 30"s, to show the same peaks and valleys representing the return radio signals of what became radar.
