  1. The other issue with a non-retention toilet was the risk of detection using the toilet in an area with known enemy patrols. Waste and the paper products associated with it would float to the surface and alert patrolling enemy vessel to a sub's presence. Using even a properly functioning high pressure toilet was often not possible because of this issue so the use of buckets continued right up until the end of the war.
