The US wished it could have intervened to stop Chile from seizing the rich nitrate territories in Peru, but our weakness only led to a failed peace conference aboard the USS Lackawanna. That effort failed because the US had no forces strong enough to threaten any of the warring nations, and we were in no position to get into a fight if the Royal Navy decided to intervene. That was about as close as a US naval vessel got to the War of the Pacific
