  1. Brasilia went through the same thing as Washington. It too was carved from a wilderness to be the capital city of Brazil. Except for the Federal buildings, nothing was there, and no diplomats wanted to be stationed there. Because of its altitude of over 3,400 feet it has a somewhat more pleasant climate than some sections of Brazil, although it can get quite chilly in winter. It has now grown to a fairly wealthy city of over three million.
