My department wore fiberglass helmets like the one at https://thumbs.worthpoint.com/zoom/images1/1/1113/14/vintage-bell-toptex-police-motorcycle_1_57b915faec32924a176f782371936537.jpg for a few years in the 70's as part of our normal patrol uniform. They were hot, heavy, and really uncomfortable in summer weather. Around 1979, a new sheriff wanted a "softer" look, so the helmets went in the trunk and only came out for crowd control situations. I complained about them as much as the next deputy, but that old Bell helmet did save my life when a "friend" of the suspect we were chasing dropped a brick on me from top of a three story building. The helmet cracked down the middle, and I was in a daze for awhile, but I was otherwise uninjured. It would have been my skull cracked open if not for that helmet. Needless to say, I never complained about helmets again. :-)
