Alcolu is one of many towns left behind by the closing of the lumber and textiles mills and their ancillary businesses. They are are scattered all over the South. The population Alcolu is down to 429, and it will become more and more of a ghost town as its aging population dies off

joetyer I thought about this for a minute, and then realized you don't actually know what ancillary means, do you? It's "providing necessary support to the primary activities or operation of an organization, institution, or industry". In other words, it was things like gas station, repair shops. log haulers, and grocery stores, the things the mill and its workers need. No mill and all those businesses disappear. As to your racist comment, I'll assume you are just as ignorant about racism as you are about the English language.
