The whole town of Shaw is a hood. It only has about 2,000 people, and about 94% of them are black. The total number of college graduates are eleven. 37.8% of households are headed by women with no husband present, one of the highest figures I've see in a town over 1,000. About 42% of the population is below the poverty line, and the per capita income is only slightly over $9,000. The average income for an entire family is $19,393. I can't think of a town over a thousand poorer than Shaw.

WORDto BIGbird I was pointing out the reasons and results of Shaw being what it is today. How about this. Find me a town that's 94% white anywhere outside Appalachia that's as poor as Shaw. It's an unfortunate reality that towns or sections of towns that are overwhelmingly black are, with few exceptions, poor, not well educated, and have a majority of births to unmarried mothers. The fact that you would rather not have it be true doesn't change the fact it is.
