The fact that British didn't seem to understand why they might need tanks to repel an attack from an enemy invoicing from the north is one thing. The lack of anti personnel and anti tank mines is what really cost the British the chance to stop the Japanese advance. Things would have gone much slower if the Japanese were forced to demine that road rather than being able to just drive down it. Anti tank guns and artillery are useless unless they can get into a semi-prepared position ahead of the line of march, and mines would have given them time to do that. The British didn't lack weapons except for those critical mines and tanks.
