  1. An even better choice would have been another Chadwick design, the Avro Lincoln. It was a cleaned up and more powerful variant of the Lancaster, and it had the top speed and service ceiling to make a safer drop of the bomb. Range, at only 1,500 miles with an atomic bomb, was nearly 1.000 miles less that a B-29, and the rate of climb was about 200 feet less. That still meant air to air refueling, and getting above the blast fast enough would have still been close. Still, the Lincoln would have been a better choice if it had come to the Silverplate not doing the job.
