  1. At this late date, Rommel's reputation as a tactician has been rehabilitated. Such was not the case in 1944. He was fresh off the disastrous loss of the North African campaign, and Hitler was aware of Rommel's growing anti-nazi and anti Hitler sentiments. Rommel's assignment to the Atlantic coast was something of a sop and a way to keep an eye on him since no serious invasion was expected before elate summer of 1944 or spring of 1945.
