It's hard to imagine a worse choice for low level bombing than the Ventura. They were slow, had an inadequate bomb load, and the GR.5 had very poor defensive armament. The stepped rear fuselage contributed to extreme buffeting at low levels, and just getting the plane to the target demanded skilled pilots. As fast as Britain could build Mosquitos, the Ventura was taken out of service as a bomber. Some were even returned to the US as reverse lend-lease. They weren't all bad thought. Coastal Command turned them into very effective maritime patrol aircraft, the fuselage having enough room to carry bulky early radars. They were used extensively by the USAAF, mostly as trainers and transports, but Venturas and Harpoons play a pivotal role in the island hopping campaign against the Japanese.
