Thanks, Mark. The story of the last great German defensive stand before it was over. While there is still controversy about Zhukov and some of his tactics, there's no doubt the encirclement and destruction of the German Ninth Army meant the last intact German fighting force couldn't fall back to defend Berlin, leaving the city defended only by the young boys and old men of the Volksturm . It must have been a hellish two weeks ahead for those that died and those that survived.
