I don't know why it would have surprised anyone that nuclear weapons were stored at RAF Lakenheath. Lakenheath had the igloos built and high security fencing installed in 1952, and the work was clearly visible to anyone outside the fence line. The British were unable to produce atomic bombs in any quantity, having made only 14 by 1956. As part of Project E, the US agreed to supply the RAF with Mar 5 nuclear bombs, one mark older than the Mark 6 bombs used by the USAF. Since the bombs were US property, they retained control of them and stored them in dedicated storage igloos, but in RAF Bomber Command igloos.on RAF bases like RAF Marham. These were not accessible to the RAF, and they were managed and guarded by the USAF. The idea was the USAF would pass the bombs to Bomber Command in the event of a "hot" launch. This was clearly not a viable long term strategy since it added an unacceptable extra ten minutes loading time into Vulcan and Valiant bombers. This strange relationship finally ended in 1961, by which time the British had produced enough hydrogen bombs to have their own independent nuclear deterrent forces.
