I've often wondered why German forces in the west fought so fiercely when all they were doing was allowing the Soviets to advance further into Germany and establish a 45 year reign of terror in their occupied section of the country. If they just started surrendering enmass to the British and Americans, they could have helped the allies establish a zone of occupation much larger than what was ultimately allowed.
