You were lucky to have left before the explosion of private cars occured. A combination of poor car maintenance, poor driver training, poor roads, and too much vodka has caused a road death rate in Russia of 18 per 100,00 compared to Europe in general with a rate of 9 per 100,000.

@TapOnX Europe at 9, Belarus at 8.9, Poland at 9.7, and the US at 12. At 18, Russia has the highest road death rate in Europe. How is that rate honestly not that bad again?
