Good article. I think it was a shame to destroy a historic piece of art just because people didn't want it on the main street of Kiev. I'm no fan of Lenin, but the statue could have been removed in one piece and then displayed in a museum. It's a piece of history now smashed and gone.

The statue of Lenin was first at the 1939-1940 World's Fair in New York City. It was removed back to the USSR after the fair and stored until after WWII. It was erected in Kiev in 1946 and lasted until 2013 during the the Euromaidan demonstrations. That statue was pulled down and replaced by a golden toilet, a good joke itself. The really huge monument at the World's Fair wasn't Lenin. It was a 79 foot stainless steel statue on top of a 188 foot pedestal. The statue was of a man with a lighted red star held in his raised right hand. It got the nickname of ""Joe the Worker", much to the dismay of Stalin. It too was removed back to the USSR, but it was never seen again. It's presumed it was melted for its steel at some point during the war.
