Many of us in the West were quite surprised that the central committee would chose Andropov. Given his long leadership of the KGB, he was better known than many of the the members of the central committee before he was elevated to General Secretary. Even though he wasn't old compared to other Soviet leaders, there were many rumors about his fragile state of health, so Andropov seemed like a poor choice. I doubt he would have made it to General Secretary without knowing where all the skeletons were in what closets due to his KGB work.
