@Longfang91 Indeed, although so was the BAR. I've never had the "luck" to be able to actually fire a Chauchat, but I've shot with the BAR a fair few number of times. Only going by what I've seen in Ian's videos, the Chauchat had a much much heavier and more abrupt recoil. The long moving barrel recoil system of the Chauchat seems to make the already heavy recoil of the 30.06 that much worse. The 8mm Lebel was also no slouch in the kick department.

And here I thought the BAR kicked a lot. Given the slow rate of fire combined with the horrendous kick, it's not hard to see why the Chauchat wasn't exactly loved by US troops. •
