  1. Considering the original spec was for a weapon with a service life of one year, the old M3's have done pretty well for themselves. I was in Belize in 1998 hiking in the jungle near the Guatemala border when we ran across a Belizean army patrol. They took a break for a while and, after swapping smokes, they let me take a look at what they were carrying, It was a six man patrol, and three of them were carrying original M16A1 rifles, one was carrying an M3A1, one was carrying a Sten, and the last had an M14. Talk about ammo logistics problems.
