  2.  @mfree80286  Indeed. I wasn't trying to say the British should have gone to a removable magazine then, only that they were taking steps that were leading to one. By 1949 the result of British and Belgian engineering produced two world beating rifles, the FN FAL and the British EM-2. Both had removable mags and the EM-2 had what should have been the standard NATO round. It was US resistance to an intermediate round that produced the less than ideal M-14 and stuck Britain with a semiautomatic battle rifle in the L1A1 SLR
