  1. Air Force pilots rarely carried 1911's. They were too big for the survival vests and the ammo and magazines weighed too much. Up until the Beretta 9mm, the standard gun was a S&W .38 Special of several different models, but primarily the M&P and Model 10. The standard sidearm of the Air Police also remained the .38 until the introduction of the Beretta.
