  1. It didn't take those in charge to recognize this idea. A broken leg generally wasn't enough to do more than get you sent to a rear area hospital. Once you were discharged, you were immediately courts martialed and ended up in the brig for a couple months on bread at hard labor or Leavenworth. Most guys didn't want that to be the end of their service since they knew they'd get no GI benefits and have a lot of trouble getting a job.
