  1. The General Motors FM-1/2 version of the Grumman F4F Wildcat was used on escort carriers to hunt and kill German subs. The number of .50 caliber guns was reduced to four from six since the Navy found four guns was more than sufficient to seriously damage or sink a sub. The main advantage was so many more rounds could be carried with four instead of six guns, and that gave the aircraft enough ammo to continuously engage a surfaced sub, cause enough damage to keep it on the surface, and then sink it with a combination of machine guns fire and the six rockets carried by most FM's. Gun camera films of them attacking a German sub with "only" four guns shows the power of the Browning .50.
