  1. Harrington & Richardson still makes a line throwing gun that's basically a sawed off shotgun converted with a very heavy barrel and using a 45/70 black powder blank. It will throw a line out about 150 yards and is the first step in establishing a breeches buoy between ships. I had the misfortune of firing one of these and, even though I've fired a lot of full power rifles, the bruise from this one took about a week to heal.
