Did you explain to them that you were actually hungry? People are heartless. I would have gone back behind the store and dumpster dived.

The answer is stated right in the video. It cost too much. Of course that's not an excuse in any way and there are simple solutions that could rectify the problem.

Our school started collecting leftover items like oranges, fruit cups, yogurts, milks, or bags of carrots and started offering them for snack for the students who couldn't provide their own. As a teacher there were times when even I could have used that food for myself, because I was hungry (but teachers weren't allowed to eat it) . I'm glad our school was at least doing something about the problem.

I noticed that there are absolute tons of people who beg in the streets near our local Walmart, and I'm assuming that they use the money they collect for basic needs kind of stuff and they probably get their food from the dumpsters. I'd be happy to know that someone is using it.

But Walmart also provides lots of food and clothing that people who don't have much to spend can buy. I can tell you that there's a lot of things that I can only afford to buy at Walmart.

I know our local Kroger used to repackage and vastly reduce produce that was going bad. I've also had some of the workers there just give me food they were going to throw, and flowers too 💐.

I can tell you that I waste coconut milk all the time because I'm single and they only sell it in those huge cartons that go bad fast because they say you should drink it in seven days. Now I disregard the seven-day bit but even still, I often can't get it consumed before the best by date. If they would sell it in small containers then I could alleviate this problem. Not everyone lives in a family and some products just come in too large of a size for a single person to eat. It's the same with celery. I always eat my celery but I never can eat it all. At the same rate your neighbors would probably think you're strange if you came knocking on their door with half of your celery saying, "Hey do you want this?" And I can tell you that I wouldn't be above checking out what's in the dumpsters behind the ritzy Whole Foods or Sprouts near me.

Shael Strata Good points. I just threw away some celery and have coconut milk yet again that I need to throw out. My problem right now is that I don't have freezer space but I will definitely consider freezing in the future.
