The fact the desktop environment works at all shows that things are going well. The gnome desktop is built on top of hundreds of packages

It was almost certainly due to Jeff moving the window. Without that I doubt it would have been possible

And the UK!

@ExplainingComputers greetings Chris. I'm very excited about the progress of these RISC chips. I was always a huge fan of the Acorn Archimedes as it seemed far more advanced than other systems so it's really cool there's a new breed of these CPUs. Hopefully it won't be long until I can use one of these SBCs for my home server.

Big shout out to Mr Scissors

Looks like you can build veracrypt from source. This is something that's normally fairly straightforward on x86, but it would be interesting to see how you got on on this architecture

"...and I've used emacs" me too!! M-x doctor

ps - looking forward to your million subscriber video...verrrry... soooon.

Then I scrolled down lol.. congratulations to those who did it

I use chat gpt every day, and copilot. I find it incomprehensible how so many seemingly clever people poo poo it. It's like how some people don't know how to use Google. It's helps, but it doesn't solve all your problems for you. But! It's very very very helpful. I hardly use Google now unless I think the llm is wrong.

Video is correct.

Rust isn't fastest ❤ close though

So I've been using an HP elitedesk as a home server over the last couple of months and whilst it was far superior to using a Pi 3 (mostly due to 8x the RAM) it does use a LOT more power... I added it up, and it was surprisingly expensive over the course of a year. So depending on your usage, something like a pi 5 might be well worth it. Great video Chris! I might have to get one of these Pi 5's for Christmas.

Dataview?! Mind blown.. obsidian.. mind keeps getting blown. So I had an idea for a plugin: GPT reformat my note nicely button. I've done this manually by hand and the results are stunning.

Napping at lunchtime is powerful.

@NoBoilerplate the whole anti sleep thing needs to die. I love going to sleep.
2
I have this, the inputs slowly died and now it just hisses on all inputs. Avoid this soundbar.

The Rock3A looks superb for being a file server with NVME cache.
2
The micro controller wars really are paying off!
2
Wow, never realised how much like (modern) php rust is
2
@NoBoilerplate just namespaces, generators, strong typing and the general syntax feels similar.. Ish. Definitely excited to try it now. Any recommendations for packages for making fast APIs? Like fast API in python..

Spinning disk hard disks are certainly becoming less and less relevant for normal users.. even with loads of video media you're going to struggle to fill these up. The good news for normal users is it means that big enough becomes much cheaper

Thoughts: - "Born to run" is an awesome book. - "Healthy" is questionable here. A lot of these drinks are full of sweeteners, there's probably too many carbs in them and I'd be really interested to know what the glycemic index of 'blended' food is.. probably not great... simply having your food in a non-blended form changes its insulin response in your body. - EU duck.. two thumbs up.. I'm still facepalming all this time later. - I personally think it's better to batch book real meals and freeze/reheat as required - I also totally get why huel etc is so popular. I almost went down that path a few years back, but was put off after trying some of it.

I've been messing about with computers for the last 40 years. It absolutely blows my mind you can buy 5TB of storage for under £100.
2
Ok the tmux replacements got me
2
@NoBoilerplate yeah, for some reason cargo would just blow up trying to compile (m1 mac related?) so I just used brew which worked easy.
2
Completely agree with windows 7 being peak Windows. It's a real shame Microsoft ruins everything
2
Yup well deserved. Great content. Please keep making it.

I can't rustist any more!

Your videos are absolute gold! Do you do any public talks or anything like that? Would very much like to listen to you talk IRL
2
@NoBoilerplate have you done much public speaking? It's quite fun
2
Consider buying used parts or systems. The used market is full of excellent equipment for far cheaper and you save ewaste.
2
Modern wifi is actually really good, but you have to make sure you've got the right hardware. My work macbook gets my full fibre speed over wifi (520mbit/sec) with no jitter or anything. Love it.

Not written by an AI lol.

xeyes lol

As mentioned in a comment on your previous video, this is often a far better option than buying a new SBC. Less e-waste!
1
You talk in exactly the same way as the guy on the technology connections channel... That is very freaky.. Are you related?!
1
I can't believe how good value these are.. Just found one on ebay with a 128GB nvme for £75! Same spec as in the video.

It was a really exciting time to be into computers. Windows 95 was a huge jump forwards, 3dfx just around the corner.. Games were getting better and better

Life isn't as simple as this video makes out

Is this channel available on peertube yet? I'm very keen to see this

Could make a fantastic windows 95 machine for all your old gaming and nostalgia needs
