When I was dirt poor five years ago, I once had a landlord tried to evict me within 30 days because he decided on a whim, he wanted to sell the place, but didn't tell me that. I told the realty agency I couldn't find a new affordable place within that time, and it was unfair to evict me on short notice, for no reason. I took them t court and the lawyer assigned to me said I could stay there for up to two years, if need be, because the landlord - an old Chinese man who didn't speak English and did all transactions through a realtor - didn't know the laws. I told them I didn't want to do that and would leave on my own, but I'd need 2-3 months to find a new place within my budget. They said the landlord would be liable to ignore my rent during this time and I could stay there for free. I told them I didn't want to do that either because I wasn't a freeloader and didn't want to "owe" anyone anything, so agreed to still pay rent until I left, even though I didn't have to. By July 2019, I temporarily moved in with my sister and left on my own, as agreed, and later completed my Masters degree and got a new job by October, allowing me to move to another country.
The point is, sometimes landlord protection rights are necessary against corrupt landlords. But this is not the case here, and these squatters are just outright criminals taking advantage of the system, and they need to be prosecuted for it. And the loopholes in the laws need to be changed.
