  1. I think if you remove anyone who has reached puberty from the definition of child, by the end of the nineteenth century I'd say most of these 'children' were in fact young adults of 12-15. Even those younger tended to be in the upper age range of 10-11. Psychologically speaking, I assume people 'grew up' faster then and became mature earlier so it might not have been as as bad, from their perspective, as it is from our own. That said, the working conditions I imagine were still bad, even for full grown adults and I think it is a good thing overall that young adults and children in Europe no longer have to do such work unless they want to. Perhaps one day automation will make future generations pity us the way we pity them.
