Because a captured mercenary is ostensibly no longer a serving member of their country's regular armed forces their government can deny overt involvement and say they were acting on their own.

  6. Firstly, the sanctions aren't as severe as propaganda would have you believe. There are loopholes and getarounds that allow countries to continue trading with Russia. Secondly, sanctions aren't necessarily designed to bite but may be largely symbolic, a case of being seen to do something rather actually doing it. Also, their primary ostensible target – governments, businesses – might not in fact be the real target; ordinary people are. The rich and powerful won't be effected by sanctions and certainly not as much as ordinary people. Iraq under Saddam is a good example.

  8. The Netherlands will become dependent on the USA and those countries under its influence for food. In effect, as you say, its to bring about food and energy shortages in Europe and the wider world for the benefit of a small group of people and to make sure no one country in the European Union can resist effectively. Saving the planet and stopping Russia are just pretexts. It makes you question the whole of the global warming/climate change/green/overpopulation agenda. ▪︎ In my opinion all of what's happening is at least in part because the rentier elites in western Europe and the USA know the game's up, that the bubble of all bubbles is about to burst, and are, as a result, planning for the consequences: US default, hyperinflation, the loss of the dollar as the world's reserve currency, widespread political dissent (especially against the ideology of neoliberalism), and the accompanying potential for civil unrest. The elites who control corporate monopoly capitalism have anticipated this and are now seemingly implementing plans that have been drawn up long ago in response. It is coordinated using bodies such as the EU, NATO, WTO, UN.

  9.  @fspa6663  The British media is basically owned and run by the same people who own and run the media in the USA, as is the political class. Together they form a rentier-comprador elite beholden to Anglo-American financial interests, the sort that have seen the rapid and catastrophic decline in the industrial manufacturing base of both countries, leading to the dire economic predicament that we, but not them, now find ourselves in.

  11.  @troutstalker4744  Yes. Coal and natural gas are both fossil fuels, though I have read somewhere that neither actually come from primitive trees the died in the Cambrian but from other geological processes and are not finite but self-renewing, though I do not know how valid the theory is.

  13. In fairness they only fought to get back the land that Russia had taken from them in the winter war and once that was achieved they ceased their military operations. Their actions could thus be interpreted as being opportunistic rather than showing a heartfelt ideological support for fascism.

Maybe it can be called free market capitalism for small businesses, capitalist entrepreneurs and start ups, but certainly not for corporations like Jack Ma's Alibaba. Indeed, I don't think there has ever existed such a thing as a free market anywhere at any time in history, except in the ideology of liberals and the empty rhetoric of neo-liberals; markets have always been regulated in some way or another by the powers that be.

That is, they only gave as much support to the Germans as was necessary. They never went all in and became full on National Socialist.

  43. Being awarded anything by western institutions is a red flag for a start. "Independent" is debased coinage, as a label it means absolutely nothing as all media use that term to describe themselves. It's who is behind the newspaper, it's proprietors, that ultimately determine the editorial line and if Novaya Gazeta is secretly controlled by or is under the influence of some shady western organisation then I can understand the Russian government's actions. That said, an attack on the press and the shutting down of newspapers is not to be encouraged. Censorship is generally bad as it closes down thought and debate.
