  1. Being awarded anything by western institutions is a red flag for a start. "Independent" is debased coinage, as a label it means absolutely nothing as all media use that term to describe themselves. It's who is behind the newspaper, it's proprietors, that ultimately determine the editorial line and if Novaya Gazeta is secretly controlled by or is under the influence of some shady western organisation then I can understand the Russian government's actions. That said, an attack on the press and the shutting down of newspapers is not to be encouraged. Censorship is generally bad as it closes down thought and debate.
