  2. Monarchies are Mafia and monarchs are Mafia dons. They're basically criminals heading organised criminal syndicates who, through sheer longevity and their ability to control the meta-narrative through control of the media, schools and the church, pacify the people they rule. This history programme is itself an example of this. Countries (i.e. nation states as we understand them today) barely existed back in the middle ages, nations were just areas of land under the control of a given mafia family, so doing what was "good for the country" only makes sense if it means doing what's good for a given ruling family.

  7. The casts contain the bones of those who were unfortunate enough to be buried. The soft tissue decomposed but not before leaving behind an imprint on the surrounding material which set like concrete around them.

  12.  @sz5263  Actually it's known as the Gregorian calendar after Pope Gregory the 13th reformed the the previous calendar known as the Julian calendar in 1582 because it had become out of step with the seasons. It's not actually Christian being based on the aforementioned calendar introduced in 46 CE. It's only the traditional dating that's Christian — before Christian era or B.C. and after Christian era or A.D. (standing for anno domini) — and this nowadays tends to get replaced with BCE standing for before common era and CE (or, rarely ACE) for after common era.

  18. Ankor Wat seems to have been a theocracy, like ancient Egypt, Inca Peru, Axtec Mexico, pre-1950's Tibet and modern-day Saudi Arabia. It seems their architecture, literature and art served only two purposes: religious and monarchical. Architecture, the arts, writing... practically all culture, either glorifying fictitious deities or hereditary tyrants. An entire society bound together by priests and autocrats, each in symbiosis with the other. It seems most societies were like that until at least the European Reformation. With the possible exception of the Chinese, secular societies seem to be rare in history, if not unique to the modern period. Even the Chinese could not escape entirely their need for religious justifications for the status quo.
