  1. How long can an animal engage in what we would call incest (inbreeding) before either: a) the population dies out due to the accumulation of deleterious genes or, b) the population increases in size to a level sufficient to render the deleterious effects caused by inbreeding moot. Perhaps these birds can get away with it for longer than other species because they have genes that make them more resistant to the deleterious effects of inbreeding, but even so, their continued existence seems precarious at best and will remain so unless they can breed to a size where inbreeding is not a problem.
