Saddam Hussein was encouraged to believe that the USA had given him the green light like it had done with his invasion of Iran previously but, of course, they just wanted a pretext to take him out and destabilise West Asia. He was getting too big for his boots and beginning to act independently, forgetting that he was just a puppet, nothing more. Besides, Kuwait did once belong to what is now Iraq so, like Garibaldi, his invasion could be seen as a case of irredentism.
