  1.  @davidrichards1741  It essentially bankrupted the USA and forced it to come off the gold standard and adopt a fiat system based on the petrodollar, an implicit admission that a permanent war economy is unsustainable. It's strange but the USA effectively went bankrupt a full twenty years before the Soviet Union and yet Reaganite neo-liberalism is portrayed as being its salvation.
