In terms of both inhabitable land and food and other resources the Earth has more than enough to support the current population. Indeed, there's a surplus of most resources, the real problem being not enough people having adequate access to them.

Unscrewed _ Up I would hardly say having enough children to make up for likely losses due to child mortality is dumb. If the likelihood of having at least 1 of your children dying before reaching adulthood is high then it makes sense to, at the very least, have at least 2 and even more so if, having survived to adulthood, they still have a good chance of dying young. When you also factor in such things as the need for manual labour (farming, etc.) and the need to have someone to take care of infants and the elderly, having quite a large family makes sense.
