The famines were caused by a combination of bad harvests, bad logistics and mismanagement/incompetence combined with perverse incentives (the need to fulfil quotas and the need to lie about fulfilling said quotas when they weren't met leading to the central government being misled as to actual grain production). The moment both the governments in China and Russia learnt the true extent of the famines they did everything to reverse course. This was one of the reasons why Mao was sidelined and led him to organise the so‐called Cultural Revolution in response: so he could get back power. Stalin did the same in the Soviet Union. His purges were all about a power struggle going on at the time within the party; competing ideas as to how to manage the country.

  5. I like how you conveniently forget the embargo and sanctions that the country had been subjected to by practically the whole world (China included). I suppose you're one of those people who says the same about Venezuela, Cuba, Syria, etc.
