We profit now, your children can pay later." Well I'm sorry but your grandchildren's future is not a loan that can be repaid later; once you push the Earth's biosphere beyond a certain limit there's no going back.

I’ve just read that the U.S. Congress has now banned gain-of-function research in the USA by public research laboratories, but it's a pity they haven’t banned gain-of-research by the US military and intelligence agencies (who , naturally, will ignore with impunity, however explicit, any ban on their activities) and those who, knowingly or unknowingly, do the dirty work of the US military such as – ta da!–China, whose alleged gain-of-function research was at the behest of, or in collaboration with, the U.S. government, or so I’m told.

It's probably just a 'sweetheart deal'. The Russians don't really need the ammunition but it's a way of creating goodwill between the two countries and making the USA a bit unsettled.

@alm5512 Maybe it has something to do with you literally killing the planet with your utterly selfish and short-sighted sense of entitlement. And because you're killing the planet you're also diminishing the survival chances of your great grandchildren. But then again, being selfish and entitled I guess you could care less about the future, even when it's that of your own prodigy.
