Even if everyone else is left landless, penniless and starving.

  4. +Nick MG That's it in a nutshell: states collapse because their rulers become set in their ways. Change threatens their wealth and power and comes to be seen as a threat that must be stopped, ultimately leading to stagnation and collapse.
