@msjujuz266 Western people make much ado about the abolishment of slavery yet indentured labour was everywhere. All they did was redefine slavery out of existence.

@SonjaHamburg One word: communism. Actually two: communist revolution. The dual threat of both revolution and communism is probably by far the main reason for the social improvements we've seen in the conditions of the working class over the last century and a half.

I assume that most people during that era didn't live like this. What the narrator is talking about specifically are slums (North American term: ghettos). That is, urban areas of overcrowded and decrepit housing with poor sanitation, often very old buildings situated in undesirable locations such as those effected by heavy pollution or prone to flooding, etc. and mostly in the cities and larger towns where most of the heavy industry was located.
