  1. ShizukuSeiji: Since when is disposing of your enemies (who are, after all, trying to overthrew and probably kill you) by imprisoning, exiling or killing them first irrational? It's self-preservation I'd have thought. Of course, if Stalin was by legitimate psychiatric criteria paranoid then some of his fears/actions could be described as such but, given his position, not necessarily.

  3. I think what you're referring to is called the steady-state theory, though I am unsure as to this theory's general acceptance within the scientific community (i.e. whether it has been superseded/debunked or remains a work in progress).
