Other areas of Europe were also suffering from the effects of war and various revolutions, civil wars and other kinds of civil disturbance that occurred in the wake of world war one. Indeed, while the famine in Ukraine wasn't deliberate (that has been debunked if you care to look) famine or near famine in defeated Germany under a British blockade was.

Reminds me of Wales and Scotland in the British Isles. Despite being a part of a political union, the United Kingdom, for a very long time they still retain a strong sense of local nationalism.

Welfare systems are necessary to act as safety nets, otherwise we'd see the same instability and poverty in Europe that these refuges are fleeing.

The Poles are too enamoured of the European Union to ever want to leave. Same with the Hungarians and Romanians. They want to be part of the West, not the East. Only if the East (Russia and China) can offer something better might they be lured away and I don't see this happening in the foreseeable future. Maybe 50 years from now.
