  1. Israel is ultimately a client state of the USA and while the majority of Israelis would like to have their government normalise relations with its neighbours this isn't going to happen. And the simple reason for this is that the USA doesn't want Israel to have normal relations with its neighbours. Rather, it wants a Middle East that is fragmented and weak, filled with client states, each threatening or being threatened by the others with Israel being the the chief threat to them all. As such Israel serves as a proxy that the USA can use as its principal antagonist in the region, much like Saudi Arabia, its other client state in the region.

  2. What would settling the Kurdish problem mean in reality? The Turks see the area inhabited by the Kurds as an integral part of Turkey and find Kurdish nationalism anathema, seeing it as conducive to separatism and the breakup of Turkey.
