@slave2damachine So? The United Kingdom is also in Europe but it acts as if it might well as be located in North America. Just because a country is geographically located in Europe does not necessarily imply it shares the prevailing sociopolitical or sociocultural values of the core European states. 'In Europe but not of Europe' is a phrase that comes to mind here. Russia is, or professes to be, a Eurasian power, connecting East with West and not merely just another continental European power and what I would say is that most western Europeans view the East warily, seeing it as radically different socioculturally speaking from the West and its political values not necessarily compatible with those of western Europe's.

As I see it Europe is finally sloughing off the political, economic and military architecture set up in the immediate post war period by the USA, a period when it was in unquestioned ascendancy. After 80 years and four generations the USA'S relative power is in visible decline and that is forcing the countries of Europe hitherto under US influence to stand on their own two feet whether they like it or not. It's a trend that will probably continue but how long before the core states of Europe act with true independence without reference to the USA is anybody's guess. Maybe by the middle of the next century but then western Europe will likely be kow‐towing to China.
