  1. The Chinese had also discovered this means of controlling the masses with Confucianism which, curiously, is an entirely secular philosophy rather than a theology. It's interesting to note the radically different ways in which the Chinese state solved the problem of citizen allegiance during the existential crisis their society went through in its formative years. I think it's one of the major contributory factors as to why Chinese civilisation has endured up to our own times.

  2. Another reason is... sheer brute force. Unlike polytheism Christianity was imposed on Rome's subjects, with the closing down of pagan temples and the deliberate taking over or desecration of pagan places of worship and destruction or defacement of their statues. An entire way of life, millennia old, was proscribed by simple edict of a single tyrant emperor. Christianity, both in its Orthodox and Catholic forms, was the perfect religion for the tyranny that Rome devolved into.
