Certain monopolies when state owned and operated for the greater good of society tend to be better in terms of social wellbeing and are thus preferable to their privately owned, for-profit counterparts. I think the best system though is the one that manages to combine both private and public in a harmonious way. The private sector can cater to the wants of society while the state can cater to its needs.
